What it is Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island, Inc. is one of over three hundred such learning institutes throughout the country for working and retired adults, both residents and visitors. It is a special community of like-minded men and women who have a broad range of lifetime experiences to share and a desire to learn what others know. Members are passionate about living life to the fullest. They are dedicated, out-going people with whom to share your enthusiasms in new circles of acquaintances who quickly become friends. Curiosity and learning never cease. When it Happens Two terms of six weeks each in the fall and winter and a term of four weeks in the spring are offered. Since many in the community travel frequently, they can enroll and pay for only those terms during which they are present. All classes are held during the day on weekdays except for special presentations or a lecture series. These are held on Saturdays to accommodate the travel arrangements of our invited lecturers. Venues Curriculum planners find comfortable and appropriate space in such places as retirement facilities with well-appointed and well-equipped meeting rooms, conference rooms of banks and other island organizations and the library. LLHHI has developed outstanding relationships throughout the community and is considered a valuable asset to supplement such things as golf, tennis and the incomparable beach that have made the island such a wonderful place to live, work and play. There’s More Besides stimulating classroom presentations and discussions, there are occasional day-long field trips by chartered bus to Lowcountry points of interest such as the golden barrier islands of Georgia, Brookgreen Gardens of magnificent sculptures, Civil War battle sites and other interesting locales. Travel to more distant places, both domestic and foreign, is possible through The Elderhostel Institute Network. You can travel with people you already know. How it Works LLHHI offers peer-organized, peer-led and peer-taught courses on every imaginable topic from Civil War history to Southern gardening, medical ethics to space exploration and literature to architecture and art. A curriculum committee of some twenty members designs a balanced curriculum of courses, finds qualified instructors from both within and beyond the membership and publishes a catalogue of the offerings from which members choose. Different courses are presented each term, and there are no prerequisites for enrollment. Frequency and Length Generally, classes last two hours once a week for four or six weeks, but there are also some single session presentations. A typical term might offer twenty courses from which members select as many or a few as are comfortable for their lifestyles and time available. The Cost There is a nominal annual membership fee of $30 for the period September 1st to August 31st. There is a tuition charge of $45 for each of the fall and winter terms and a $35 charge for the spring term. Tuition is payable at the time of enrollment in classes selected from the catalog which is sent to members several weeks before each term begins. Joining To join LLHHI please send your name, address, telephone number, email address and your check for $30 per person payable to LLHHI. You will then be included on our mailing list to receive special notices and catalogues with course titles, descriptions, dates and locations. |
